Recently, I went to a panel discussion about mental wellness at school. One of the speakers brought up a point about resilience.
He said, “Resilience is all about your perception of a situation.”
That statement intrigued me to look into resilience a little more. How come some people are more resilient than others? How do you become resilient? Who is resilient?
So many questions and not enough answers.
You are resilient. Think about it. There are so many things that you have been through. Not everyone would have made it that far in your situation.
You look at yourself and you think that you’re so ordinary but, you’re resilient.
What is resilience?
Resilience is your ability to recover from difficulties. You’ve had difficulties. In fact. you’ve had many and you’ve overcome them. Sometimes, you barely made it. But you made it nonetheless, and here you are today.
You did not give up. Even if you don’t think you’re resilient. You are. Let me tell you why.
Resilient quality number one, you’ve been reading this blog.
If you have been reading this blog. If you have been following my advice then, you’ve been cultivating resilience.
People who are resilient know their boundaries.
You keep good company.
You have your support system. You surround yourself with people who make you feel good. You feel wanted in your circle of friends. You know that the amount of people in that circle does not define the quality of your support group.
You have a self-awareness.
You know what type of person you are, what gets you going, and what brings you down. You also know what you respond to the best in life. And you are continously open to learning more about yourself.
You can spend time alone with yourself and you know the importance of it.
You enjoy your own company. You can sit in silence because you are not intimidated by solitude. You do not run from being alone with your thoughts or yourself.
You practice self-care even if it’s not in the most traditional sense.
Lifting heavy stuff may not be the most calming thing to everyone but for you, that’s your thing. You love to dance or mindlessly watch reality TV. It takes you away from reality for a little while.
But, make no mistake. You’re not running away. that’s your self-care. You know self-care is what keeps you from burn-out. You know that the occasional rest day does not hurt you. It only helps you to come back fighting harder.
You face your problems head on!
You know your limits but, you also know that those limits are not to keep you prisoner. You are not bound by limiting beliefs. Your perspective on life is different and it changes with every scenario.
You definitely have learned not to take life too seriously.
And you have not let the fear of failure stop you from chasing your dreams. You may pause for a little bit to redirect but you never completely stop. You stopped letting bad events define you.
Life is full of good and bad. Those bad events are there to make your story more interesting when you tell the final tale.
If you weren’t resilient before, you are now. Make it your affirmation. Say it with me: I am resilient. You do not live in your head although it’s pretty tempting sometimes.
You see yourself as a survivor rather than a victim.
There is always a way for you to survive your problems. With that being said, you’re a problem-solver. You don’t let your problems get too big. You know that there is always a way to solve a problem.
It may not always be the way you want to solve it but, you know there is an answer. It does not mean you are not affected by anything that life throws at you. It means you are effective at dealing with what life gives you.
You may be sad or disappointed for a while but, your bounce back is strong. Keep on being a resilient person!
If no one has told you yet! You are doing a great job in life! You’ve gone with the flow and allowed life to bend you but, you didn’t let it break you. If that isn’t resilience, I don’t know what is!
